Biography – Theresa (Terri) Hinton

Portrait of Theresa (Terri) Hinton, CSMLS-MLTTerri Hinton was born in Victoria, BC and grew up in many areas of British Columbia including Zeballos, Kaslo, Kimberley, Courtenay and Royston. She attended Malaspina College, British Columbia Institute of Technology and graduated from the Vancouver General Hospital School of Medical Technology.

Terri worked as a laboratory technologist for 38 years at the major hospitals in Vancouver. After retiring from there in 2013, Terri began a new career, teaching at BCIT and Stenberg College. She fully retired in 2021.

Terri began her youth volunteering career with Scout’s Canada. She volunteered for 15 years and was awarded the Medal of Merit.

Terri moved to Air Cadets with her children. She started with the 655 Richmond Squadron sponsoring committee in 1996 as a “canteen lady” and eventually moved to the chairperson position. She coordinated the 655 50th Anniversary weekend. She became a member of the BC Provincial Committee in 2006. In 2007, she earned her volunteer award for ten years of service to the BC Air Cadet League. During her time at the provincial level, Terri was the BCPC Effective Speaking Coordinator and Director for Public Relations from 2009-2015. In 2014, Terri coordinated the Yukon-Pan Territories with the running of the National Effective Speaking competition in Whitehorse, YK. She was the Coordinator for the ACLC for the National AGM in 2016. Terri was BCPC 1st Vice President in 2018-2022 and President in 2020-2022. Terri is currently a National Governor for the Air Cadet League of Canada. She is on several committees including Risk Management and Screening and Registration.

In 2009, Terri was presented with the BCPC Certificate of Merit and in 2014, the BC Provincial Committee of the Air Cadet League of Canada presented her with the Certificate of Honour in recognition of outstanding service to the organization. At the National level, she was presented with the Certificate of Honour from the Air Cadet League of Canada in 2016.

Terri was presented with the Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers in 2017. In his letter to Mrs. Hinton, Governor General David Johnston wrote, ” Volunteers like you are fundamental to the well-being of our county, reflecting the rich diversity of Canada’s people and the many talents and interests which enrich our society.”

The Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers recognizes the exceptional volunteer achievements of Canadians from across the country and celebrates a wide range of volunteer contributions. As an official honour created by the Crown, the sovereign’s Medal for volunteers is a part of the Canadian Honours System.

Currently, Terri is a BCPC Director and Governor of the Air Cadet League of Canada.
